1st Service

1955

The first services of Hope Lutheran Church were held in a store front on West 41 st Avenue in San Mateo with Rev. L. Henry Nielsen officiating. He was later formally installed as Pastor in June 1955. In August 1955 a groundbreaking service and ceremony was held for the first unit of the church to be built at 600 West 42 nd Avenue in San Mateo.

1957

In October 1957 the Preschool was opened, which became a prototype for others, and is still in operation today.

1959

In 1959 groundbreaking services for an education unit was held.

1964

A new sanctuary was built on the grounds and dedicated in September 1964.

During the past 60 years, Hope Lutheran has seen changes in personnel as well as in the community, sponsored a church in Half Moon Bay, continues to be active in social concerns in the local community, i.e., Samaritan House, CORA, Home & Hope, etc. and in other areas of the country and world.

Our doors are open – all are welcome at Hope.
