Lenten Devotions: Christian Virtue
by Dan Severson
Pastor Dan uses the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector as an example of virtue in the eyes of Jesus. The Pharisee pointed out all of the good works he had done, but also pointed out that he was thankful that he was not like the Tax Collector – thus, showing his distaste another being. The tax collector begged for mercy, forgiveness and love, recognizing that all of his deeds were not good.
Who was justified in the sight of God? The Tax Collector! In the words of Jesus: We should love the Lord our God, and our neighbor as ourselves.
Virtue doesn’t come from heaps of good works, it is a gift from God. We should point to Jesus as our virtue.
