What’s So Great About Christianity: Chapter 24
by Dan Severson
Chapter 24 – The Problem of Evil: Where is Atheism When Bad Things Happen?
Summary: In this chapter, D’Souza addresses the argument posed by some atheists which states that there cannot be a God because there is great evil allowed in the world. The Bible does not give us a definitive answer why evil is allowed, but it does tell us that there are things in our lives that we cannot understand today, but will become clear in the afterlife. We also know that even though people do evil, God can use that evil to accomplish his purposes. God created people with the ability to choose right and wrong, and does not have the responsibility to remedy our mistakes. Another atheist argument is that if there is a God, there would not be so much suffering. Suffering is a part of natural life, and Christianity has done a great deal to alleviate suffering in the world. Religious faith offers a concern to alleviate the pain of others, a desire to reflect God’s love n our lives, and a source of strength or consolation in times of difficulty or tragic events.
