A Religion in Search of a God
September 25th, 2022 – The Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Our readings today address the issues that arise for people of great wealth. The concern of prophets such as Amos, apostles such as Paul, and of Jesus himself is our relationship with money. There are many bible passages regarding the spiritual dangers and temptations of wealth because that happens to be a very common form of idolatry. Jesus shares a parable that illustrates how the pursuit of wealth affects our moral and spiritual well being. Paul encourages his wealthy friends not to let the love of money turn themselves into slaves who bow down at the altar of their bank account while others starve for lack of food. Instead, the bible tells us to trust in our Savior, and use our privileged position to generously help those who have been left out.
