Accountability and Grace
The sermon for this Sunday is based on the first reading from Genesis and the gospel text from Mark.
The Genesis text consists of the story of Adam hiding from God, and from himself by using leaves to cover himself. He had fallen into shame after failing to avoid the snake’s temptation that “You can become like God, knowing good and evil.” The shame he feels demonstrates that it’s not possible to create our own moral code apart from God’s moral law given in the Ten Commandments. Referred to as “natural law” in philosophy, these moral laws are written in our conscience. There’s no society on earth that tolerates lies, theft, murder, etc.
In the gospel text, Jesus tells a parable that has a similar theme. The point? When our conscience turns against us for doing something we know is wrong-it’s precisely at that point that we are open to seeking God’s grace and forgiveness. Sin is not without accountability. But the shame and guilt it causes can be healed through faith in God’s word.
