Forgive and Be Forgiven

Join us this Sunday as we continue our study of The Lord’s Prayer with the fourth (“Give us today our daily bread”) and fifth (“Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against”) petitions.

The spirit of our present age is filled with hubris (an overblown view of our self-sufficiency) and constant talk being wronged and taking revenge. What Jesus teaches us to pray directly addresses both of these self-destructive inclinations.

Jesus teaches us that all we have comes from God’s gracious hand. Jesus actually teaches us that we are not forgiven ourselves if we do not forgive others. There are no exceptions or “work arounds.” Those who want mercy must show mercy. This is an invitation to live free of our self-imposed worldviews and a challenge “to forgive as freely as the Lord has forgiven us.”
