Receiving the Word
Today’s message reflects the gospel message for this Sunday from Matthew 13. In Matthew’s gospel, both Jesus and his disciples “sow the seed” of God’s word by proclaiming the good news that “the kingdom of heaven is near.” In this memorable parable, Jesus explains why this good news produces different results in those who hear.
The parable of the sower speaks about different soils for seeds. We can see bits of ourselves in all four soils. – Like the wayside, sometimes we allow the Word no room in our lives. – Like the stony places, we sometimes have flashes of enthusiasm to receive the Word, that quickly burns out. – Like the soil among thorns, the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches are constantly threatening to choke out God’s word and our fruitfulness. – Like the good ground, the Word bears fruit in our lives.
