With Open Eyes

With Open Eyes

The 3rd Sunday in Advent

In today’s gospel reading, John refers to Jesus as the “light.” As the only human being who is also divine, John’s use of the term “light” means that only Jesus reveals who God is and what God’s plan for human history is. The first reading, from Isaiah, was read by Jesus in Nazareth at the time he began his ministry. After doing so, he remarked, “Today, this passage has been fulfilled in your hearing.” Thus, this passage sheds light on Jesus’ mission. Defining that mission is what the sermon will consider.
